About
1000 years ago, most people worked in the field and lived in small
villages. The nobility constructed castles surrounded by walls, in which they resided with their family. The farmers of the villages took refuge within the castle in times of war.
At this
time great monasteries were also constructed, and
later numerous cathedrals were built.
