Ingestion (the intake of food) occurs in the mouth where food is chewed and mixed with saliva.

Our mouth is the entrance into the alimentary canal. There are teeth, tongue and salivary glands.

  • Our teeth are very hard, fixed on our jawbone. We use them for cutting and crushing the food.

  • Our tongue helps us to mix food and saliva; and of course to swallow.

Salivary glands produce saliva and are located in the inner lining of the mouth. (Saliva is a watery fluid containing several components that kills bacteria and begins the digestion of starch).
